Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roof shingle on the Outer Banks. They are both economical and versatile, lend themselves to working well on steep sloped roofs, are fairly sunlight and UV resistant, require little or no maintenance and are economically priced for the Owner. Asphalt’s primary purpose in roofing shingles is to serve as a waterproofing agent. Asphalt also holds the granules in place and adds to the shingle’s overall strength.
